The OurAXO Story: How an Axolotl Built the First Cause-Driven Sustainable Fashion Brand

The OurAXO Story: How an Axolotl Built the First Cause-Driven Sustainable Fashion Brand - ouraxo

This is the story of how a retail veteran walked away from a successful career to build the world's first cause-driven, sustainable fashion brand inspired by a critically endangered salamander. It is the story of why every product carries an axolotl, why every purchase funds real conservation work in Mexico City, and why we believe sustainable fashion is the only kind of fashion worth making anymore in 2026.

What ourAXO is: The world's first cause-driven sustainable fashion brand, built entirely around the critically endangered axolotl — the smiling Mexican salamander with as few as 50 to 1,000 left in the wild (IUCN Red List).

Who is behind it: Retail veteran Richard Vorisek, who walked away from a successful corporate career to found and lead the brand as CEO.

Where your money goes: $1 from every purchase funds axolotl conservation, donated through UNAM's Adopt an Axolotl program in Xochimilco, Mexico City, with public impact reports every year.

Why it is different: Every product is 100% certified organic cotton or sustainably sourced, with the certification stamp sewn directly into the label.

You're Invited to Wear the Change

Most people know the axolotl before they know its name. Mention an animal that never grows up, that can regrow a lost limb, that quietly became a Minecraft and pop-culture icon, and then point to the feathery gills on the side of its head, and the recognition lands. "Oh, I've seen that. I didn't know it was real." It is real, it is a salamander, and it is vanishing from the only lake on Earth it has ever called home.

ourAXO exists to change that. We are the world's first sustainable fashion brand built entirely around a single endangered animal. Apparel is roughly a [$500 million] retail business, and close to 99% of it leans on polyester and conventional cotton, materials that bring havoc to our earth through fossil-fuel fibers, heavy water use, and microplastic pollution. We decided to build the opposite: clothing made from 100% certified organic cotton and sustainably sourced materials, where every purchase sends real money to frontline conservation.

That is the whole idea. Wear something you love, and quietly help keep a species alive.

From Crisis to Creation in Xochimilco

The axolotl's last wild stronghold is the ancient canal system of Xochimilco, on the southern edge of Mexico City. Pollution, urban sprawl, and invasive fish have pushed wild populations to the brink; by some estimates, a 99% collapse over recent decades.

We started ourAXO because, the way I see it, this is the rare cause where fashion can actually move the needle. The axolotl can become a global symbol of regeneration — an animal that literally rebuilds what it loses — and a brand built around it can channel everyday purchases into protecting it. That felt worth building.

Why I chose a new path

I'm Richard Vorisek, founder and CEO of ourAXO. I spent a long career in retail, and I was party to all of it, the volume, the throwaway materials, the brands that overlooked sustainability and purpose because the margins were easier without them. What I talk about now, and what I am doing now, I never uttered a word about in corporate America. That's on me, and that's exactly why this brand exists.

ourAXO is the correction. Every decision here runs through one filter: does it genuinely help the axolotl and the planet, or does it just look like it does? We chose transparency, certified organic and sustainably sourced materials, and a donation tied to every order. I'd rather build slowly and honestly than fast and hollow.

Every Purchase, Real Impact

$1 from every purchase goes to axolotl conservation. We donate directly so the work on the ground is the point, not the marketing.

  • Funding the Frontline Conservation Effort

Funding the frontline conservation effort. Our donations flow through UNAM's Adopt an Axolotl program, run through the university's Biology Institute in Xochimilco, Mexico City. The funds support captive-breeding, habitat restoration, and water-quality work that gives wild populations a fighting chance. (Prefer to give straight to the source? Donate directly to Adopt an Axolotl →)

  • Planting Trees in Xochimilco

Alongside the donation, our climate commitment supports tree planting around the Xochimilco wetlands — better watershed, cleaner water, healthier habitat for the species we're here to protect.

  • Transparent Reporting

We publish an annual impact report on our website so anyone can see where the money went. The cadence is yearly for an honest reason: we're a new brand and our sales are just beginning, so we're keeping the reporting simple and truthful while we grow. The commitment to give is there from day one regardless.

Our 5-Year Goal: A Sustainable Factory Village

Within five years, we want to build a sustainable factory village in Mexico, a first-of-its-kind home for 100% sustainable large-scale manufacturing, with space for artisans who make one-of-a-kind pieces alongside it.

The village is designed to provide job training, on-site daycare, educational opportunities, and fair, dignified working conditions that meet and go beyond Mexico's modern labor standards, including the move to a 40-hour, five-day work week. It's a big goal, and an honest one: we'd rather show you the destination we're building toward than pretend we're already there.

Wear the Change

ourAXO Love is Love axolotl t-shirt made from 100% certified organic cottonWhen you wear our products, you are not just expressing your style; you are standing up for the planet, for the axolotl, and for a better future. You are showing that sustainable fashion can be a force for good. Browse the full collection here.

Buying our merchandise means choosing a company that genuinely cares about people and the planet, versus the 99% of others whose only real concern is profit, manufactured with materials that are terrible for the environment. Not one of our competitors donates any money to axolotl conservation.

Here is a fact check anyone can do in 60 seconds. Go to Amazon. Search for an axolotl t-shirt. Look at the listings that claim to be eco-friendly. Then click through to the product description. What you will find, almost without exception, is that the actual fabric is listed simply as "polyester" or "cotton." Not 100% organic cotton. Not recycled polyester. Just the conventional stuff, which is among the worst materials for human health, for the workers who handle it, and for the rivers and oceans where the axolotl and every other water-bound species lives.

At ourAXO, every product is 100% certified organic cotton or sustainably sourced material, with the certification stamp sewn directly into the label. The proof travels with the garment.
